The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is a federal program that offers medical assistance to individuals and families in need. You cannot apply to them directly, however. Instead, your state as well as local government will have programs providing medical assistance. Many of these programs target the low to moderate income level individuals.

The amount of money you could receive is based on several factors such as income, how many people are in your family, what the average salary is in the area where you live and if you currently have insurance. In most instances even if you do not qualify, your child might. Children are approved most of the time, even when parents, themselves, do not qualify for assistance.

With the pandemic at the top of everyone’s list these days, if you have incurred costs associated with the Coronavirus help is available. The DHHS currently offers medical groups reimbursement for treating uninsured individuals, or individuals who have low insurance coverages.

This is called the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. These programs provide reimbursement to the doctors and hospitals at Medicare rates.

Participating medical organizations apply to be a part of this program in order to direct the money to eligible applicants. They must first check your insurance and confirm you are uninsured and are not covered under any other federal healthcare program.

The good news is that participating doctors and hospitals who participate must agree not to bill you for any remaining balance. They must accept reimbursement from the federal government as payment in full. This program is overseen by the Health Resources & Services Administration.
