You may be able to get Medicare health insurance when you are younger than 65 years of age if you have a medical condition that qualifies you. Qualifying health conditions are those that the Social Security Administration recognizes. Conditions include specific terminal diagnoses and disabilities.

You may qualify to enroll in a Medicare insurance plan when you are 65 years old. This health coverage takes the place of your employer-based policy when you retire. However, you may still sign up if you are still working and have health coverage through your employer.

Enrollment in Medicare health plans is only available if you are a United States citizen or a qualified non-citizen. Medicare considers you a U.S. citizen if:

1.     Your birth occurred in the United States or one of its territories, including Puerto Rico, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and The Northern Mariana Islands.

2.     Your birth occurred in a foreign country and you have completed the legal naturalized process.

3.     Your birth occurred in a foreign country and at least one of your parents is a citizen of the U.S.

If you are a non-U.S. citizen, you must:

  1. Reside in the U.S. as a legal permanent resident, and
  2. Have lived in the country for at least 5 years consecutively.

How you qualify for Medicare coverage will also determine when you can sign up for a health care plan. It is important to sign up when you are first qualified to do so. If you miss this period, you may have to wait several months for coverage.
